Intake Notice: The Study Needs New Subjects
From Dr. Frederick Darling · Recovered Oct 19, 2026 · Fiction
To whoever finds this notice,
The Darling Sleep Institute is accepting new subjects for eight nights this October, at our facility on Walter Price Road in Cayce, South Carolina.
Our study asks one question: what if your nightmares weren’t dreams, but memories?
Our first subject, Sam Mercer, came to us for help. He told the intake nurse his dreams felt too real. He was right. By session seven, the monitors showed he was not dreaming at all. He was remembering. By session thirteen, the things he remembered had begun to follow him back into the lab.
I could have ended the study. I chose to instead.
I am not a monster. I am a scientist. Monsters are what I study.
You will not need to sleep. The memories are awake now, and they walk the halls on their own. You will walk through them in small groups. Keep moving forward. Do not turn back. Stay with your group.
If it becomes too much, say I WANT OUT to any member of my staff, and you will be walked to the nearest exit. My staff will not touch you. They will get close.
Some returning volunteers have asked whether I learned anything from . I learned that some things should not be locked away. They should be studied.
Report for intake after dark.
